Stratigraphy and sedimentology of the Hawaz Formation and its relationships with the Mamuniyat Formation.

This report presents the results obtained from a research agreement signed between REPSOL-
YPF and the University of Barcelona. The agreed research focused on the stratigraphy and sedimentology
of the Hawaz Formation outcropping in the Gargaf area. The report has been prepared by M. Marzo
and E. Ramos from the University of Barcelona and benefits from the expertise of J.M. Samsó (field
mapping), Dr. J.Mª. de Gibert (ichnology), Dr. M. Navidad (volcanic petrologist), D. Barsó (sedimentary
petrologist) and D. García (remote sensing). The research has also benefited from the valuable
scientific cooperation of R. Arnez, J. Arregui, N. Bolatti, N. McDougall, J. Suárez and J. Vilá from
REPSOL-YPF, C. Fernández and K. Tawengi from REMSA, and A. Khoja from NOC. We also acknowledge
the technical collaboration from P. Cabello and the “Servícios Científico-Técnicos” of the Barcelona
University and the logistical support from FEZZAN Tours.

The objectives of the research carried out on the Hawaz Formation outcropping in the Gargaf
Arch (figures 2 and 3) were:
1. Lithostratigraphic subdivision.
2. Characteristics of the lower and upper stratigraphic boundaries.
3. Description and interpretation of the sedimentary facies and facies associations.
4. Sequence stratigraphic analysis.
5. Subsurface to outcrop correlation.
